George Brayton
George Brayton George Brayton George BraytonIn Chrysler The Life and Times of an Automotive Genius by Vincent Curcio, American inventor George Brayton (1772-1837) is recognized as the most important of the early American inventors of vehicles utilizing internal combustion. The extent of his accomplishment may even be more wide reaching than whats on record. Inventor George Selden (1846-1922) developed a combustion engine that he admitted welches influenced by Braytons work and was the basis of a lawsuit that went on for years and that would have declared Selden as one of the most vital minds in the history of automobiles. Originally winning on the basis that his patent covered any engine using gasoline, he was beaten by Ford on the appeal.According to the book, Brayton turbines in their earlier uses were in a Providence, RI streetcar and an off-rail omnibus in Pittsburgh, PA. His engine was explained this way Air is compressed in the single-acting pump, which has a volume one-half t hat of the power cylinder. The compressed air passes from the constant-pressure receiver through pipeand over the absorbent materialthrough which the fuel is fed by a pump. Here it takes up vapor and the mixture passes the wire-gauge grating and into the cylinder, where it burns. Means are provided to prevent entirely shutting off the air from the power cylinder, and thus there is kept constantly burning a small flame which increases for the power stroke. Governing is effected by a variable cut-off to the power cylinder.Thermodynamics and Thermal Engineering by J. Selwin Rajadurai explains how the components of the Brayton Cycle (invented in 1872)consisting of a compressor, turbine, heat exchanger, and combustioncreated open cycles and closed. Of the open, the author wrote Fresh air in an ambient condition is thrown into the compressor, and the air gets compressed isentropically. During this stage, work is done on the system. During this process, the pressure and temperature of the working substance increases, whereas the volume is reduced. The high pressure proceeds into the combustion chamber, where the fuel is burned at constant pressure. Due to constant pressure heating, the temperature and the volume of the working substance increases. The resulting high temperature gases then enter the turbine, where they expand to the atmospheric pressure isentropically, this producing the power. It goes on to say that because of the isentropic expansion, the temperature goes down while the volume rises. The exhaust gases leaving the turbine go into the atmosphere and, since theyre not recirculated, it is an open cycle. The closed cycle portion has the same compression and expansion processes but a constant heat pressure addition fills in for combustion and the exhaust is replaced by constant pressure heat rejection. Thermal efficiency of the cycle comes from regeneration but is only recommended when the turbine exhaust temperature is higher than the compressor exit tempe rature. In the end, the Brayton engine eventually was seen as inferior to the later developed Otto, which relied on a four-stroke piston system instead of going with a two-stroke. But few can deny Braytons impact on the progression to todays modern automobile.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. The components of the Brayton Cycle (invented in 1872)- consisting of a compressor, turbine, heat exchanger, and combustion- created open cycles and closed.J. Loaned Office Space Pays Off for Banker
Loaned Office Space Pays Off for BankerLoaned Office Space Pays Off for BankerAfter being laid off, Detroit banker Jeff Ciochetto lands a job with MT Bank in Pennsylvania in just six months. When Jeff Ciochettos entire departement welches laid off from their jobs at FlagStar Bank in metropolitan Detroit last October, he wasnt going to let an economic downturn keep him down. So the former first vice president and senior commercial banking division manager kept going to work. Not at the bank, but at the amtsstube of a generous friend. My buddy is a CPA, and he gave me space in his bro to use while I searched for a job, he said. For Ciochetto, 50, who could have just as easily trolled job-search Web sites at home in his bathrobe, it helped him to maintain his work schedule and his professional mindset as he worked his way through the ups and downs of unemployment. I got up in the morning, I got dressed, I went to the office, the FinanceLadder member said. I put on a tie, I met with people . I kept that whole work mode going. Being unemployed can be very depressing. It was better to have someplace to come to than be home alone.Looking for a job in an area that was very hard hit when the economy started its downward trend was a daunting task. But Ciochetto was up for it. I think I worked harder looking for a job than I did when I was working, he said. There were two things that Ciochetto came to terms with pretty quickly as he looked at classified ads and job-search Web sites, and networked throughout October, November and December. To begin with, he realized that he would likely have to relocate from the Detroit area, where he had worked for more than 20 years, in buchung to find a job with the responsibility he was looking for. Second, even if he did relocate, finding a job that matched the salary he had been making was going to be difficult. Its pretty tough in this industry everywhere, he said. I was finding that there was a huge salary depression. He opened up his search to areas of the country where there was a lot of banking activity, including Oregon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Florida, Texas and Arizona. Still, he wasnt getting a lot of response to his resume.Ciochetto continued to speak to recruiters and friends throughout the end of 2008. But it was a tough few months. I think I was going for the Guinness Book of World Records for the number of jobs I applied for, he said. I interviewed with a lot of recruiters, but I got the feeling they were doing it more for the purposes of building up their inventory for when the market finally improved, than for specific jobs. That was frustrating.Neighborly adviceCiochetto received another benefit from going into his friends office some advice from the man in the office next door. In January, I told him I wasnt getting a lot of response to jobs I had applied for, he said. He asked me if I had heard of Ladders. I hadnt, so I went and checked it out, and I was amazed at the number of jobs, and how you co uld create your profile. It just created a whole new set of tools for me to use.And propelled his job search forward. The difference from the other sites was incredible, he said. Once I started sending resumes for jobs listed on Ladders, I received a lot of phone calls from recruiters that had specific jobs. I had several phone interviews. There was just a great deal more activity, and it was more serious. These people were actually looking to hire people.Expediting the searchOne of the first jobs Ciochetto applied to after looking at Ladders was for a vice president position at MT Bank. He had his first contact with them on January 15, and had his first interview, by phone, just five days later. After a few more phone interviews, he was brought to Pennsylvania, where the job was located, to meet people there, and then, a couple of weeks later, went to Buffalo, N.Y., where the banks headquarters are, for a final round of interviews. He was offered the job in mid-March and will move to Pennsylvania in mid-April, where he will become vice president and business-banking team lead for a territory in Pennsylvania that includes Lewisburg and Harrisburg.According to recruiters he has spoken to, its not unusual for people in the banking industry to take nine to 15 months to find a new job in this economy. So Ciochetto said he feels fortunate that, although he is taking a pay cut from his last job, and relocation expenses are up to him, he has found a job that will offer new challenges in a tough economic market. The benefits as well as the incentive part of the compensation was one of the best Ive seen, he said. Ill have eight loan officers in the field reporting to me. The challenge, when you are coming from the outside, is convincing the people you work with that you are the right person for the job. If theres not a challenge to it, then whats the point?

Companies That Hire High School Students
Companies That Hire High School StudentsCompanies That Hire High School StudentsFinding a job when you are young can be a bit of a challenge, as not all companies hire high school students. You are ready, willing, and able to work. But where do you look for a job? If youre an ambitious teenager, you may have already logged lots of hours babysitting, mowing lawns, pet sitting, and doing general casual work around your neighborhood. The minimum hiring age for most real jobs is set at 16 years old, but some employers will hire younger students. At other positions, there is a minimum age requirement of 18. Whats the best way to find a company who will hire someone your age? There are a few things you should know to help your job search go as smoothly as possible. A good place to abflug is by looking into companies that hire high school students as a matter of policy. There are a lot of familiar establishments that you see in malls and shopping centers around the country, and getting a jo b at one of these companies can give you experience, as well as a job you may be able to keep for a few years while you navigate through college, vacations, and even different locations. Many employers have an age requirement of 16, but there are a few companies that hire younger workers. Check with your local store before you apply to find out whether they will accept an application from someone your age. Companies That Hire Teenage Workers To find job listings from these employers, search Google for the company name, then visit the Careers/Jobs section of the website to apply. You will be able to find even more job listings by searching Google using your age and jobs as search terms. You can also search Indeed.com using the company name and your location to generate a list of open positions. Many companies list, right in the job posting, the minimum age job applicants must be. You will be able to apply directly online to companies with open positions. A quick way to navigate I ndeed for available positions is to search for the terms 16-year-old or 16 years old and your location, for example. When you specify an age, it will generate a list of jobs with the age requirement listed in the job position. Applying in-person is another option. Many of these employers accept walk-in applications, and you may even see a Were Hiring sign on the door showing that there are jobs available. When you apply, be prepared for an on-the-spot interview, and have all your contact information and work experience, if any, ready for the employer. Heres a list of some of the top U.S. companies that hire youth workers along with the age requirements for being hired. Many other local and smaller companies may also hire students under 18. Check the website, call, or stop in to inquire about minimum age requirements. 209 Watch Now 17 Summer Jobs for Teenagers Companies That Hire High School Students Adidas (16)Aeropostale (16)American Eagle (16)Applebees (16)Auntie Annes Pretz els (16)Banana Republic (16)Barnes Noble (16)Bed, Bath and Beyond (16)Best Buy (16, 18 for some positions)BJs Wholesale Club (16)Boston Market (16)Burger King (15, 16 for some positions)Carls Jr.(16)Chicago Beef Guy (16)Chick-fil-A (16)Chipotle Mexican Grill (16)Cinemark (16)Chuck E. When you get called for an interview, make sure you are prepared, and present yourself as a responsible, mature, and capable candidate. What you wear matters, as well as how you answer the interview questions. Getting Working Papers If you are under 18 years old, you will probably need to obtain working papers (officially called Employment / Age Certificates) in order to legally be able to work. Requirements vary by state. The best place to find out if you need working papers is your school guidance office. Get your certificate prior to starting your job search. It will make the process easier if youre ready to get hired. Restrictions for Youth Employees There are restrictions on the hours teenage employees can work. Limits include the number of hours per day, the times during the day when students can work, and the number of hours that can be worked each week when school is in session, and during the summer. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and state law determine the specifications on work for teenagers (14, 15, 16, and 17 years old) under the Child Labor Law and youth employment statutes. There are no hourly restrictions for ages 18 and older, although businesses that serve or sell alcohol and cigarettes may have different age requirements. Exceptions to Minimum Age Requirements Keep in mind that age limitations may vary based on state and local laws, and on the job for which you are applying, so check the requirements before you apply.

When You Hate Your Boss But Love Your Job - The Muse
When You Hate Your Boss But Love Your Job - The MuseWhen You Hate Your Boss But Love Your Job A friend who shall remain nameless has been talking to me a lot lately about how much she loves zu sich job but hates her boss. To be sure, her stories of her managers many misdeeds provoke a horrific reaction in me, and I find myself grasping for encouraging things to say in response. Its elend an easy situation to navigate- but whats the alternative? Leaving today and taking a gamble that everything will line up elsewhere? Yes, having a boss you hate is a big reason that people start the job search, but its not the only way to handle the problem. And if getting a new gig isnt something you want to consider at the moment, then youre going to figure out how to deal with the imperfect scenario great job, crappy boss. 1. Take a Good LookAt yourself, at your boss, at your team and the department youre a part of, at the work you do. This isnt exactly new advice, but have you considered if its yo u thats the problem, or at least a little piece of it? Youre no doubt a fantastic employee and any manager would be lucky to have you working for her, but still, it doesnt hurt to evaluate the reasons that you cant deal with your horrible boss just to rule out your involvement. If she micromanages you, could it because you turn in incomplete products to higher-ups? Or, if shes never around to answer questions, could it be that youve proven yourself to be incredibly reliable and shes not aware youd like more feedback?Figure out exactly what it is about your manager thats problematic and determine if theres anything you can change or address. If theres nothing (and thats possible), maybe you could adjust the way you react to her behavior so you dont escalate situations. For example, if shes constantly emailing you at odd hours, expecting immediate responses, its up to you to gently set guidelines for your response rate- rather than responding snappily. Also, if theres anything, anythin g at all that you find redeeming about her, write it down and look at it whenever she makes you want to quit on the spot. Is she supportive of the companys flex work policy? Does she give you free erst einmal on big, meaty projects? Yes, consider yourself lucky to have the autonomy. Sure, your boss may not be the best manager, but look at the big picture and see how the view is.2. Remind Yourself Why You Love Your JobThats right. Continue to bask in the glow that exists from simply loving your job. Make a list of all of the things about your ort that you dig. Write down everything from unlimited organic milk to your standing desk to being able to work closely with the graphic design team. Nothings too small for this list. And if you are really, sincerely passionate about your position, this should be the easy part.Once you have your list, you can go on doing your work and rejoice in the fact that there is so much that you appreciate and value. Does it make sense to leave all that be hind because of a bad boss? Plenty of people make that very move, but unless your manager is causing you severe anxiety or making it so you dread going into the office every day, try to really hone in on the parts of it that are working well. Avoid letting your big, bad boss see you rattled. If this person is as insecure or incompetent as he needs to be to be making one of his reports so miserable, it wont do you any good to let him think hes gotten you flustered. Try to stay positive in his presence, even if that means grinning and bearing it in the moment (and unleashing a rant to your best friend later). If you love your job, it probably means youre doing good work, work youre proud of. Concentrate on maintaining that stride, and maybe- just, maybe- some of your frustrations will begin to dissipate.3. Wait it OutIf youve examined the situation thoroughly and concluded that theres nothing wrong with anything youre doing and your boss is, indeed, a really awful person, trust that y oure not the only one who sees it. Few truly terrible individuals can fool others for very long. If your manager regularly undermines you, if she takes credit for work youve completed, if she puts on a totally different face in front of the CEO, rest assured that its highly unlikely youre the only one seeing the manipulative side of her. No matter how much praise is bestowed on her now, its probable that, at some point in the (hopefully near) future, someone else will take stock of whats happening, and eventually shell be put in her place. One can hope, right? In the event that its not just a brutal personality youre dealing with- the job description didnt say being nice was a requirement- make sure youre documenting everything. You deserve fair treatment and respect for the work that you do, and if your manager is disrespectful and manipulative in emails, dont delete them. Its a headache thinking of what leveraging the paper trail would mean, but its better to have leverage than not . But honestly, if the love-my-job-hate-my-boss situation doesnt improve over time- you cant deal, her behavior worsens, she doesnt get the boot but rather gets promoted- you might have to move on. In reality, its probably a better use of your time to start the job search than it is to convince a higher-up or an HR person that your boss needs to go. If a large part of the reason you adore your job is because of the type of work itself, look into companies with openings for similar positions. If, on the other hand, the company culture and all the people who arent your boss are your primary reasons for finding happiness at the office, then start poking around for a potential internal transfer. Either way, you deserve to work with people who bring out the best in you- so dont let a great job keep you from working with an awesome boss. Somewhere out there is a position thatll provide you with awesome responsibilities and a manager youll love.
